BRAINS
It's taken a little more than a month to get around to it, but the Atreeyu residence has finally managed to wrangle enough Internets to keep the empty hallways buzzing and the insomniac in me thrive. Since I best be tucking myself in soon, the following post will be but a minor photo peek at some of the things going on around here:
For one, my bedroom is more or less complete. I bought a persimmon rug to add some color to the black/brown IKEA furniture that holds the room together, and started to pull out small facets of my toy collection to color up the nooks and crannies:
For two, my grandparents sent me a large box of various wares for the kitchen which included at least 3 neon colored wash cloths, some brass candle stick holders, and an ice cream scoop. The kitschiest prize was a couple of lacquered walnut coasters, but the treasure was a set of ceramic fish salt and pepper shakers that my great-grandma Daisy used to have.
San Francisco (aka Mr. Cold and Soggy Gloomy Pants) has been getting me down this week. The higher powers have decidedly cast Blizzaga over the entire Bay Area, leaving its inhabitants tired, grouchy, and cold-blooded. It's times like these that I wonder why the human race never evolved with hibernation penciled into their seasonal schedule. All I would need is a few down comforters, some large pillows, my teddy, and a well posed fetal position, and I would be out for the rest of winter.
Speaking of beds, because last Monday evening was an absolutely wretched way to begin the week (I managed to lose my cellphone... for one) I decided that i had to do something 'constructive' to distract myself. While the universal illustrations in the IKEA manual very specifically said that the work needed two people, I flipped that manual the bird and built my bed frame on my own:
I followed up this weekend by building my dresser...now my room is almost complete! What's left? A few shelving units for my toy collection and books and a mirror to hang above the dresser... then I'll have a complete abode :D
A few nights ago Kat and I watched Krzysztof Kieslowski's La Double vie de Véronique, a film I was given as a graduation gift from one of my best friends from college, Cristian. The film was stunningly beautiful to say the least, utilizing a visual narrative that elegantly intertwined rich images of mortal sensibility and wonder.
The story follows the lives of two women; Weronika from Poland and Véronique from Paris, both played by the gorgeous actress Iréne Jacob. The two young women lead similar lives as musicians, sexual beings, and as humans capable of worldly awe with only a few subtle differences. As the film progresses Kieslowski delivers visual parallels that interlink the two Veronicas, captivating their inherent ability to inform each others' beings without even knowing the other exists.
The story thus suggests a fantasy that each of us is matched somewhere by a an exact double who by virtue carries their life as well as the other's. This concept is admittedly more exciting to me than the traditional idea of having a 'soul mate' and in turn a more encouraging idea that we are truly never alone.
It was a pure gift to view this film, and a loving thanks to Cristian again for helping me find it when I needed it the most.
