It's been almost an entire year since I graduated school and moved back to California. While sometimes I regret not taking a few months off before diving straight into the working world, it is unbelievable how fun and satisfactory it has been to work with the the crew at Six Apart. Its an honor to be a part of a team of motivated, intelligent, and fun people. In case you haven't heard, they're awesome, and its because of this that I rarely find myself yearning for my salad days.
But as time passes in the post-collegic flux, the responsibilities of transitioning into adulthood have grown thick. This last Monday was the first time I had meetings from 10 am all the way through 6:30 pm, a circumstance which can only be explained by a recent switch of roles from designer to associated product manager. By the end the day I was in total disbelief. Was I really ready for this? Is this the kind of responsibility I've been looking for?
Conveniently concurrent to my moments of self-doubt, I've recently been introduced to the TV series made of win and awesome, Battlestar Galactica. I won't go into how addicted I am to the show, or how I would give anything to be Adama's baby's Mama, but I will mention the kick-ass, hard-core, lady pilot Starbuck, played by Katee Sackhoff.
The best pilot in her fleet, Starbuck keeps her chin up and her fists in front of her to demolish anyone or anything that gets in her way. As the Cylon threat escalates, she, like the rest of the characters on the ship, often has to test her strength and determination in the most dire of situations. Watching her pummel through space-age obstacles without batting an eyelash inspires me to do the same with my tasks. For this, I nominate Starbuck as my power animal of the month.
Sure, battling Cylons isn't exactly on par with building a web application, but frankly, I don't give a frak.
