Little BAD ROMANCE, music, and Happy Thanksgiving!

I've been coming back a little empty handed lately when looking for content to post, but the ever faithful Brandon saved the day by showing me this Little BAD ROMANCE video, which brings a bit of that RAWR RAWR-AH-AH-AH-ROMA-RO-MA-MA to the adorable antics of the Little Big Planet sack-kids. Haw!

Aside from listening to "Bad Romance" all day on repeat for about two weeks (shhh, don't tell anyone), I've started to slip back into the habit of listening to electro after prepping to see Röyksopp last Tuesday. The concert was swell, particularly with a guest appearance from Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife and Fever Ray.

Yesterday however, at the very same venue, I had my first GWAR experience... which was definitely something else. My friend Ben describes GWAR as the "Cats (the musical) of Metal", which is very true as long as you replace the cat costumes with monster faces, gigantic armor, and outlandish prosthetic alien penises. But really, it was fantastic, and I've never been soaked in so much blood/alien bile/robot fluid/??? in my life.

Heaven Can Wait Video - Charlotte Gainsborough feat. Beck

Charlotte Gainsborough's music video for her song "Heaven Can Wait" is simply incredible. Directed by Keith Schofield and featuring Beck, the video is loaded with dinosaurs, bathtubs filled with Fruity Pebbles, colorful families, skateboards on hamburgers, and pancake astronauts (which I'm almost positive was inspired by this image that surfaced on the web about a year ago), to name a few. Update: According to Buzzfeed, the director cited reddit and ffffound as his inspirations. That explains the Pancake American

Geek Chic - LOOMLAB and Lo Res Polygonal Pumps

When it comes to geek fashion, I tend to avoid the Hot Topic screen printed 8-bit truisms and go for the geek-chic kind of stuff. Without going overboard, LOOMLAB and United Nude's Lo Res series are right up my alley.

LOOMLAB, founded by artist Jane Henry, has just opened shop with a series of scarves inspired by binary codes, braile, circuit borads and more. Really beautiful, and just in time for winter (or... Christmas *wink*wink*nudge*nudge*).

But these polygonal pumps by United Nude really caught my eyes. As part of their Lo Res design project, United Nude "semi-automatically" designed these shoes by digitally scanning objects into a 3-D computer model and re-generating the results into various resolutions. The facets are glorious, and the shoe even comes in five flavors (White, Light Blue, Burgandy, Black, and my favorite, Grey). *Ahem* Did I mention I'm a size 9? Kthx!

COMPU-HOODIE

Graduate student Joe Malia has conceived what is quite possibly the best solution for all of those portable console-playing, iPhone-putzing, Blackberry-button-pushing folks out in the cold. The Mobile Scarf (shown to the right) provides all the privacy and warmth of computing in the home, with the added benefit of blocking out any major nuisances such as sunlight or people. Of course, for those who require that magnitude of solitude in the workplace, the compu-hoodie (shown above) will suffice, with an added mouth-hole for breathing/eating when necessary. 

These pieces were created for two projects titled Private Public and Design for the Computer Obsessive, intended to explore how design plays into "...guiding...individuals through their turbulent affair with the technology." See more of Malia's work at Design Interactions at the RCA.

Artist Hollis Brown Thorton is doing it right. Paintings, transfer prints, and incredibly rich marker drawings explore mysterious sentiments of nostalgia in the form of VHS labels, dark and quiet arcade screens, and scuffed-out photos with no faces, creating an atmosphere of alienation amidst the familiar. And when the stretch of your 'messy' desk is a work of art, you know you're doing something right.
